Cinquain Poetry
A cinquain is a short poem consisting of five lines, inspired by tanka.
The structure of a cinquain can vary, but a common form is as follows:
- Line 1: A single word title or subject (noun)
- Line 2: Two adjectives describing the title/subject
- Line 3: Three verbs or phrases describing the title/subject
- Line 4: A short phrase or sentence about the title/subject
- Line 5: A synonym for the title/subject or a word that sums up the poem
Another form is comprised of 2 syllables in the first line, 4 in the second line, 6 in the third, 8 in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth.
Poets have the freedom to add or subtract one syllable from each line.
That’s a lot of freedom for such a small poem.
